This Saturday we were invited along to a Demo ride with cycling made easy's range of electric assisted mountain bikes. Now amongst the "mtb purist brigade" and I have to admit I was one, these "pedal props" seemed to be the kind of bike that would appeal to the old or infirm alone, however 30 minutes on one has me totally reconfiguring that thought. Ever thought that you want to go on an all day epic with your younger faster mates, or introduce friends or partners to the joys of mountain biking (but they don't have the time ....or inclination to put in 50-100 miles off road training per week like you do?); well E-bikes fill that void perfectly. They open up long rambling off road rides to pretty much anybody regardless of levels of endurance.
With various levels of kit, componentry and suspension from Rockshox right up to Fox colour coded bling, these bikes are actually proper mountain bikes, capable of tackling all but the gnarliest of terrain. Hydraulic brakes with big rotors for safe controlled braking, Hard Tails or Full Suspension.... front and rear, there is an E-bike to suit your riding style and your Budget.
As they are power assisted the rider is still required to pedal as on a normal bike, however with up to five levels of electrical assistance from Economy up to the impressively speedy Sport or even shock inspiring Turbo on some models, steep hills just become a bit of a laugh, allowing you to crest the hill with plenty of energy to fully enjoy the descent on the other side. Battery run times seem to be in the range of 50 miles before a mains recharge is required so all day Epics are available to the family, friends, kids or even grannies!
Perhaps most exciting for us at Flowtastic is that we have a hire agreement with cyclingmadeeasy and for those in need of a little climbing help on our guided rides, or those, who like me, are just intrigued we can organise daily or longer hire of one of these bad boys.
